DISTRICT YOUNG LEADER GUIDER - HEATHER BOOSEY
Young Leaders

Young Leaders are 14 to 18 year olds who give their time voluntarily to help in the Units.

Most girls do it because they want to be of use, gain leadership skills and enjoy working with children. You do not have to have previously been a Rainbow, Brownie or Guide to be a Young Leader (YL).

YLs organise games and activities, supervise crafts and help in many and various ways. They use their own experiences to help support the girls in the Unit. They create a bridge between the Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and the adult Leaders that is invaluable.

All the Young Leaders work hard and are very much appreciated by the girls and Leaders.
Each Unit currently has at least one YL.

Young Leaders at campWe are very lucky in Liphook to have such an excellent group of young people willing to give up their free time at a busy stage of their lives, and the leaders and girls are very grateful to them. Each of them has different skills and talents, but they all have lots to give.

We are also fortunate in Liphook(to the envy of many other Districts) of having a large number of volunteer YLs to help with the Units, several of whom will go on to become Guiders. This helps to give us all confidence in the future of Guiding in our District.

The following girls are currently working in the Units:

Rainbows:
Amy C
Fiona F
Brownies:
Fay G
Joanna B
Victoria S
Hannah S
Megan S
Guides:
Lucy S
Eleanor P

Pack Leaders/Rainbow Helpers

looking after RainbowsThere are opportunities for Guides at age 13 to become a Brownie Pack Leader or Rainbow Helper to gain leadership skills and experience working in Rainbow or Brownie Units.
Pack Leaders /Rainbow Helpers continue to belong to and attend their Guide Unit meetings.

Pack leaders very often go on to become Young Leaders, and the leadership experience they have already gained by helping in the Units is very valuable and useful, especially when they reach sixteen, if they decide to do the Adult Leadership Qualification.

If you are a Guide coming up to or over age 13 and are interested in being a Pack Leader or Rainbow Helper, speak to your Guider. You need to be sensible, reliable, self-confident, patient and to enjoy working with young children.

Please note that if you are under age 14 and not already a member of Liphook Guides, it is not possible to help in the Units, as you would not be covered under the GirlguidingUK insurance policy.

Currently (2006) we have four Pack Leaders/Rainbow Helpers working in Units:

Rainbows:
Hannah W
Katie B
Nicole H
Brownies:
Sophie D
