LIPHOOK DISTRICT GUIDES

Becoming a Young Leader

Young Leader rugby shirt Young Leaders are girls aged from 14 to 17 who are attached to one of the Rainbow, Brownie or Guide Units and work as part of the Unit leadership team.

As a Young Leader you would be a member of the Liphook Senior Section. You can be both a Ranger and Young Leader at the same time.

Once you are registered as a Young Leader, you can wear the Senior Section Uniform with a badge tab. You will be asked to make/renew the Guide Promise to show your commmitment to Guiding. There is usually a simple ceremony, often combined with a Promise ceremony for girls in the Unit you are working with.

The Promise is:

I promise that I will do my best:
To love my God,
To serve the Queen and my country,
To help other people
and
To keep the Guide Law.

In addition Young Leaders are asked to make a commitment to serve the wider community.

From age 14 to 16 you can, if you choose, work on the Young Leader Qualification which is designed to strengthen the skills you need to become a good leader.

From age 16 you can do the Adult Leadership Qualification which leads to gaining a Warrant to run a Unit. Your Young Leader Guider would support you and help you through this. If you do not wish to take this qualification, there is no pressure to do so. At age 18, if you do not want to be a warranted leader but would still like to carry on working in the Unit, you would then be a Unit Helper.

At age 16 you would have a Criminal Record Bureau check, but apart from that, there is little formality.

The District will provide your Uniform top, but there are no other expenses.
