LIPHOOK DISTRICT GUIDESProfilesThe following are examples of real people giving different levels of commitment to Guiding: Albert - an occasional helperAlbert is invaluable as he is an excellent handyman and he helps to keep our HQ maintained and safe for the girls to use. We could do with a large team of Alberts! Mary - a supporterMary is not a member of the Guide Association but supports us in many very useful ways. She helps out with making things for the carnival every year and decorating the float. She supports by offering to teach skills to the girls in Unit meetings once or twice a year including showing the Guides how to do cross stitch samplers and teaching the Brownies cycling proficiency. She is always willing to help with obtaining resources or to turn up if extra hands are needed. Kay - a FOG memberKaye is a member of the Friends of Guiding. She attends their meetings which are held about once a term and helps plan fund-raising events and other ways of supporting the Units. The Friends of Guiding are known as FOG. They come to District events such as the Thinking Day Service (usually held at the Methodist Church) and organise the refreshments which they are very good at. They help at local events such as the Lidba charity bike ride where they provide refreshments for the riders at drink stops on the route. Being a member of FOG is ideal for Kaye as she cannot make a regular weekly commitment, but wants to be involved and to contribute, and this allows her to give as much or as little time as she has, and to attend events as and when she can. See becoming a Friends of Guiding member and Friends of Guiding Report Kate - a Unit HelperKate came along to help when her daughter joined Rainbows. She was a Unit Helper. This meant she attended Rainbow meetings every week but did not take overall responsibility for the girls or wear a Uniform. The Guider would ask her to do specific jobs with a group of Rainbows such as helping with crafts. Everyone has unique skills and personality traits and so the role of each Unit Helper is different. You can play a minor or major role in the Unit depending on how you feel. Some Unit Helpers are confident and enjoy organising games, others prefer to be told what to do. Kate enjoyed her role so much she has now decided to take the qualification to become a Guider. See Unit Helpers and Other Volunteers Christine - supporting in various rolesChristine started off being a Friends of Guiding member, but later she also became a Unit Helper with Brownies. She then took on the role of running the Trading Post, ordering and supplying Uniform and other items and she is also the District Secretary, attending District meetings where she takes notes and later circulates the minutes. She is not a Guider but is an essential part of the District, fulfilling very crucial roles. See becoming a Friends of Guiding member and Unit Helpers and Other Volunteers Anushka - 'part time' GuiderAnushka gained her Guider's Warrant at age 18, but like several other Guiders in the District, as she is away at university, she is not able to attend all the Unit meetings. This is not a problem, she can still be a member of Liphook District and of the Guide Unit to which she is attached. She comes to as many meetings as she can, mainly at the beginning and end of terms, and attends any special events such as Holly's Fun Day where she played an important role. Her support is valued. See becoming a Warranted Guider Karen - GuiderKaren is a Brownie Guider and is fully involved in Liphook District. She attends her Unit meetings regularly although as she has a very young daughter, there are occasions when she cannot make it, but this is not a problem as she informs the other Guiders well in advance so alternative arrangements can be made to ensure there are enough adults. When her husband's shift patterns are not convenient, she can take a break of a term or more from attending Brownies. As well as planning and running Unit meetings, Karen attends District Guiders meetings, plays a role in planning District events and contributes to shaping District policy. Liphook District also holds several social events each year which Guiders can attend. Guiding is a great way to make friends. Local Charities and BusinessesWe are very fortunate to have support from several local businesses and organisations such as LiDBa and the Carnival Committee who generously give us a donation each year, and other local businesses who support us in various ways.
