Liphook's Camping Traditions
Each Guide Unit in the UK runs its camps in a different way although there are also many common factors shared by all.
Also each camp that our District runs is different to all others we have organised, but some things remain fairly constant throughout the years.
This section gives a broad overview of a typical Guide camp. See Camp History for details of camps we have held in the past.
We camp in Icelandic ridge tents, usually 5 girls to a tent, although the Senior Patrol of 13/14 year olds, owing to their advancing years, are given the luxury of camping in a dome tent.
Each Patrol has it's own colour and their neckerchiefs, plates, bowls, mugs, cutlery and other 'possessions' such as washing lines and dish washing cloths are colour coded too.
Girls make their own bedding rolls every day which are stacked on a bedding rack in the tent.
The Guides are organised into work duties to do the jobs like cooking, wood and water collecting, cleaning the toilets, preparing the table and dealing with rubbish each day. After these jobs are completed there is lots of time for fun and activities.
Points are awarded for inspection, and the best Patrol wins a giant windmill to put outside their tent for the day. Whoever was noisiest at night gets the porridge dixie to clean out after breakfast!
An average day would be: Getting up at 7.30am
Breakfast at 8am. Washing up,
Putting up the flag. Duties. Inspection.
Activities. Elevensies.
12.30pm Lunch. Washing up. Rest hour.
Activities. Foursies. Duties.
7.00pm
dinner. Washing up
Game. Flag lowering.
Hot chocolate. Sing Taps. Bed at 10pm.
Some of the activities we have taken part in at camp over the past years are:
Kayaking, canoeing, surf skiing, archery, rock climbing, abseiling, horse riding, pedal karting, zip wire, crate challenge, camp-fires, agility courses, assault courses, treasure hunts, wide games, macramé, tie dying, wellie boot painting, Scooby doos, parchment craft……… and many others.
There is usually a shopping trip to a local town or city such as Winchester, Brighton or Bournemouth, with sightseeing or a trip to the beach if possible.
On Friday evening we have camp fire singing and pags are awarded to various Guides for certain achievements such as being the best first time camper, or the most helpful or cheerful. These pegs are highly sought after.
One of our unofficial recent traditions is that a certain Guider always 'cleans out' the serving bowl of Angel Delight after the meal...
This brief description does not do justice to the fun we have at camp, it's not really something that can be explained.
Most people think it is madness to spend a week in a field with very basic equipment, but most Guides come back for more year after year!
